5/20/2025: BED FLIPPING FOR THE HOT HOT HEAT OF SUMMER

in florida, it’s consistently 90 degrees now. the wet isn’t here yet, but it will be. the bugs are coming out. hurricane season approaches. it’s time to add in some flowers to enrich the soil for fall planting in a few months. however, there are some edible plants that i am attempting to sow ‘n’ grow:

  • OKRA, okra loves the heat and the blooms bring in beneficial bugs. and, the roots help the soil so these sturdy veggies are great companion plants!
  • LUFFA, a type of gourd that thrives in the HEAT. i’m giving it a try!
  • BASIL loves the heat!
  • YARDLONG BEAN/CHINESE LONG BEAN, i can’t find them right now, but if you got ‘em, sow ‘em!
  • SEMINOLE PUMPKINS, i started these about 3 weeks ago now, so hopefully they will grow. when i get back home, i plan to build a support system for them, using the sunflower stalks from the spring blooms that died off.
  • PEANUTS, i haven’t planted them yet, so i am hoping it is not too late to try!
  • WATERMELON, especially if i don’t try peanuts, i will try the watermelon variety “florida giant watermelon”
  • SWEET POTATO, i won’t know if they’re growing until i start digging, but i must be patient and allow for the vine to begin to die. then, i’ll know it’s harvest time.
  • i am harvesting dried pigeon peas to use for seed and for cooking later on in the year. eggplants are here, and so are the last bit of strawberries. i grabbed some dill flowers and one of the last sunflowers to make a bouquet. and, i harvested the last of my kale!
